Who Sends Their Kids To A Private School For Troubled Teens

Private schools for troubled teens are full time residential programs that provide support and immersive care for teens with behavioral issues that cannot be effectively managed at home. Such teen help programs help troubled boys learn the skills they need to overcome their challenges without the distraction of the triggers and temptations they deal with at home. Full time facilities are generally a last resort for parents that feel they have tried everything they can to help their teen turn his life around without success.

What Do I Need To Know About Teen Help Programs?

Although each facility will have their own unique curriculum, most involve some combination of a variety of therapy modalities, academics, life skills experiences and extracurricular activities. The primary goal of therapeutic boarding schools is to allow teens to identify the root of their issues as a way to develop positive, long term changes. Knowing what an effective program will provide can help you make a more informed choice about the best solution for your son.

  1. Individualized Plans – While many troubled teens share similar symptoms, their motivation and goals are unique. Look for a program that is willing to treat your son and his plan of care like the individual he is. There is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to therapy and regular personal time with experienced counselors and therapists is necessary to update your son’s treatment plan as he works his way through the program.

  2. Academics – Maintaining educational goals is usually a significant priority for concerned parents. Many schools offer an academic program to help your teen keep up with his class; however, make sure that any facilities you are considering have a nationally accredited program, so that your son can easily transfer home any credits he earns.

  3. Improved Communication – Most teens dealing with behavioral issues need to work on communicating effectively with their peers and authority figures. An effective facility will offer a variety of team building activities that will help your son practice positive interaction and healthy emotional bonds.

  4. Parental Involvement – You know your son better than anyone and even though you are seeking outside help, you should still be able to remain a large part of his care and treatment plan. Look for a program that keeps you involved and informed and values your input when it comes to your son. Between regular family therapy sessions and Aftercare help as he transitions back home, the most effective schools will consider the family unit in the long term treatment plan.
