What Can My Teen Learn From A Residential Treatment Progam?

What is a Residential Treatment Center?

Dealing with severe behavioral issues in a teen can be one of the most exhausting experiences for a parent and it is discouraging when nothing you do seems to help him turn his life around. Issues such as depression, anxiety, anger, defiance, substance abuse or mental disorders can inhibit healthy adolescent development and ability to maintain healthy relationships at home and school. In cases where an individual fails to respond to any outpatient efforts, a full time facility such as a residential treatment center can be the answer.

What Do They Do?

Residential treatment centers are designed to provide round the clock care and coaching for troubled teens. Through a combination of individual, group and family therapies, academics and healthy recreational activities, teens are guided toward identifying the core issues that lead to their bad behavior and focus on effective ways to heal and cope with day to day challenges. The immersive environment provided by these programs allows teens to leave old temptations, routines and stigmas behind as they make a fresh start in secure and supportive surroundings.   Because each teen has unique needs, they are thoroughly assessed by a therapist upon arrival. This allows the staff to creative an individualized plan of care that will help him target the skills he needs most in order to move forward.

What Will My Teen Learn?

Although the specifics of each curriculum are different, your teen will have the opportunity to learn a combination of the following:

  • Communication Skills – Group therapy and team activities help each teen learn how to communicate effectively with their peers and authority figures, set personal boundaries and practice healthy interaction.
  • Healthy Coping Skills – Most teens in residential treatment centers are there because they have developed unhealthy responses to daily temptations and challenges. They are taught how to identify their triggers and practice reacting in a positive way.
  • Self-Esteem – Many bad behavior choices result from a lack of confidence. Through a variety of therapy modalities, such as recreation or music, as well as extra-curricular activities, residents learn to recognize their strengths and identify their weaknesses and handle them appropriately.
  • Academics – Many programs offer accredited academic programs in order to help residents catch up to their peer group, repair failed grades or simply maintain their place in their class. Qualified tutors teach students how to study effectively and be accountable for their schoolwork.
  • Balance – Ultimately, each teen needs to be able to return home knowing how to keep a healthy balance in his life between work, healthy play and positive relationship building. Students and their parents are guided through the transition time in order to help them maintain the valuable things they have learned.
