In 2010, the number of teens in jail or prison was more than 700,000 in the United States. That doesn’t include incarceration in juvenile detention facilities or hospitalization following criminal behavior. That number is staggering and may have grown in the years since.
Your son may have been struggling with behavior problems for the past few years. As a parent, it can be frustrating and heartbreaking seeing a child doing things you know are wrong or risky. Some believe that it is the fault of the parent, but you know better. You’ve tried everything to help them, only to come away with no results and more helpless than ever.
It may be time to consider a therapeutic boarding school as an answer.
What Is a Therapeutic Boarding School?
A therapeutic boarding school is partly an academic institution and partly a residential treatment facility. It allows patients/students to focus on recovery from their conditions while improving their overall academic performance.
On staff are psychologists, psychiatrists, group leaders, therapists, teachers, tutors, recreational coaches, administrators and nursing staff. These professionals work together to be a team of support for your child, alongside peers of their own age and gender who are experiencing similar struggles.
What Conditions Do They Treat?
Some of the conditions treated include:
Depression
Mood disorders, such as Bipolar Disorder
Anger triggers
Personality disorders, such as Borderline Personality Disorder
Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)
Addiction recovery (following appropriate detox prior to admission)
Eating disorders
Self-harm and suicidal ideation
How Long Is a Stay?
A stay depends on the needs of the student and how much help they require, either academically or therapeutically. But keep in mind this is a boarding school. Students are generally dedicating themselves to admission for one school year, not including breaks for summer, spring, ect.
The average stay is twelve to eighteen months. This includes therapeutic treatment and reintegration.
How Much Does a Therapeutic Boarding School Cost?
A therapeutic boarding school is a two fold institution and so functions in part as a private school. Because of this, you pay tuition that includes education, board and most therapeutic measures. But other elements will be covered by insurance, such as medication and any medical needs.
On average, a therapeutic boarding school costs around $60,000 per year, some being more and some less. Payment plans, scholarships, loans and other methods of payment are available, so discuss it with your chosen school.
